Leadville is a year-round base for the high country. In winter the big draw is snowmobiling on groomed trails and backcountry powder around Turquoise Lake and the private ranch outside town. In summer it is UTV tours through the historic mining district and up toward Mosquito Pass, dirt bike single track, hiking Mount Elbert and Mount Massive, and fishing Turquoise Lake and Twin Lakes. Leadville Offroad Adventures runs the guided snowmobile, UTV and dirt bike tours from 141 E 9th Street downtown.

Yes. Elk Mountain Adventures, LLC has run tours out of Leadville since 2015 and now operates as Leadville Offroad Adventures. Same owner, same guides, same shop on East 9th Street. Sledville and leadvilleoffroad.com are both the outfit's own sites; book by phone or the request form on either.

Not for the snowmobile trail tour or the UTV tours. Guides cover the machine and the route before you leave, and you can ride double or ride along with the guide. The High Adventure snowmobile tour and the dirt bike tours are for riders with experience. Snowmobile drivers must be at least 15.

Leadville is about 25 minutes from Copper Mountain, about an hour from Vail and from Breckenridge, and about two hours from Denver. In summer, Aspen is about an hour and a half over Independence Pass.

Leadville averages about 157 inches of snow a year and sits above 10,000 feet, so the season runs long, typically from December into early April depending on the snowpack. Call for current trail and snow conditions before you drive up; some early-season and late-season days come down to what fell that week.

No. Every winter tour includes a current model year Polaris sled, helmet, boots and a snowmobile suit. Bring goggles or sunglasses, gloves, a neck warmer and warm layers to wear under the suit.

Drivers must be at least 15 years old. Younger riders can ride double on the trail tour with an adult driving. Ask when you book if you are bringing children and we will set up the machines to match.

The two-hour Guided Snowmobile Tour on Polaris Indy 550s. It runs on professionally groomed trails, the guide gives full instruction before you leave, and you can ride single or double. Save the High Adventure day for after you know you like it.

An off-trail day for intermediate and advanced riders on Polaris Pro RMK 850 mountain sleds: open meadows, hill climbs and tree riding on the private 1,000-acre ranch outside Leadville and on public land. Half-day, full-day and multi-day options, with skills instruction available.

A dirt bike converted with a Timbersled kit: a ski up front and a track in back. Ours are Yamaha 450-powered Polaris Timbersleds. If you ride moto, it feels familiar within an hour. Snowbike tours are private and guided.

Mountain weather and snowpack decide some days. Ask about the weather and cancellation policy when you book so there are no surprises; it is confirmed on your reservation.

A UTV, also called a side-by-side, is a four-wheel off-road vehicle with bucket seats, seat belts and a roll cage. Ours are 4-seat Polaris RZR 1000 Turbos. On a guided tour you either drive your own machine behind the guide or ride along in the guide's machine, so nobody needs off-road experience.

Guided UTV tours start at $450 per UTV, and each machine holds up to four riders, so a family of four rides for the one price. The tour is three hours, guided and supported, with helmet, fuel and on-trail support included.

Mosquito Pass tops out at 13,185 feet and UTVs are allowed on the Leadville side. It is open only when the snow is off, usually mid-summer into early fall, and the upper road is narrow loose rock with no guardrails. Whether a given day's tour goes high depends on conditions and the group; guests have recorded elevations around 12,700 feet on the tour. Ask when you book.

Yes. The RZRs are 4-seaters and families are the most common booking. Kids ride as passengers with a belt and helmet. Ask about the minimum size for a passenger and about driver age when you book.

Yes. In winter the same 4-seat RZRs run with heated, enclosed cabs on a three-hour route through the snow-covered mining district. It is the warm option for groups who want the scenery without riding a sled.

Layers. Leadville is at 10,152 feet and the tours climb from there; it can be 30 degrees cooler above treeline than in town, and afternoon storms roll through in July and August. Closed-toe shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen. The high-altitude sun is stronger than it looks.

The mining district roads open in late spring; the high passes melt out through June and July and close again with the first big storms in fall. September, with the aspens turning gold, is the month the photos on this page were taken.

Yes. The dirt bike tours are for intermediate to expert riders and previous dirt bike experience is required. The terrain is real mountain single track and mining roads at 10,000 to 12,000 feet. Newer riders, or mixed groups, should look at the UTV tour instead.

Yes. Ride your own bike if you prefer, and bring your own gear if you have it. Complete personal protection kits are available to rent if you do not.

All day, guided and supported. Fuel and on-trail support are included. Bring a hydration pack; the air is thin and dry and you will drink more than you expect.

Once the trails dry out and the snow leaves the high country, generally June through early October. The first storms of fall close the top.

Yes, on the Leadville side. Mosquito Pass (13,185 ft) is a rough four-wheel-drive road over the Mosquito Range to Alma, open only when snow-free, usually mid-summer to early fall. The upper section is narrow, loose rock with no guardrails.

Drink more water than you think you need, go easy on alcohol the first night, wear sunscreen and sunglasses, and give yourself a day if you are coming from sea level. The tours are built to be enjoyed at 10,000 feet; the guides carry water and set the pace.

US Highway 24 runs through town. From Denver it is about two hours west on I-70 to Copper Mountain and then south on CO-91, or through Fairplay on US-285. Copper Mountain is about 25 minutes, Vail and Breckenridge about an hour, Aspen about an hour and a half over Independence Pass in summer.
